Sport for All
Sport plays a major role in school life in St. Gerard’s. Through our extensive and inclusive PE and Games programme, pupils are introduced to a wide range of sports, learn to be part of a team, and gain confidence in their physical and sporting abilities.
Our PE and Games programme is taught by specialist, enthusiastic and supportive teachers and coaches who aim to help pupils to lead full, active and healthy lives.
- PE is taught to all classes from Junior Infants to Standard 6 and promotes enjoyment of, and positive attitudes towards, physical activity thus preparing our pupils for active and purposeful use of leisure time.
- All children from Standard 3 to Standard 6 also participate in three hours of Games after-school each week. The two main school sports are hockey for girls and rugby for boys. Every child is given the opportunity to represent our school in fixtures against other schools, including friendly, league and cup games.
- Along with rugby and hockey, many other sporting activities are also enjoyed – particularly during the Summer term – including tennis, rounders, cricket, touch rugby and athletics, swimming, cross country, and soccer. The pupils also enter competitions in sailing, golf and equestrian and the list continues to grow!
Overall, in the Junior School, the emphasis in PE, Games and Sport is on participation and enjoyment - but in saying this, we also enjoy good healthy competition!
